Hyde Park Functional & Fun Family Room
Our clients for this family room makeover was a husband and wife with two children. The house is new construction in the Hyde Park neighborhood on Chicago’s south side.
The clients had been living in their new construction home for a while and felt that something was missing. They wanted a multi-functional space that would serve as a family room as well as a storage solution for their toys and electronics. They also requested a pop of color that would match the family’s bright personality.
To start, we met with the family to assess their needs and measure the space. Safety was a top concern since two young children would often be using this space. This would mean child proofing any storage solutions. Additionally, a solution for electronics that become hot during use would need to be considered. Since the television was already installed in the room, we wanted to make sure we built around its position and size.
We are so happy with this tech savvy makeover! The wiring for the flat screen television was routed behind the drywall giving an ultra clean appearance. The center doors in the custom floating entertainment unit were outfitted with a thermostat which is programmed to turn on fans while the family’s electronic game consoles were in use and hot. The other four cabinets are drawers that pull out to reveal a perfect spot for the kids’ toys and family storage. The floating white shelves flanking the television enhance the beautiful blue accent wall whose color was picked to coordinate with the existing carpet. This "techy" makeover is completed with custom under shelf lighting that is smartphone controllable for ultimate convenience and control.
